What Are ChatGPT Ads? The 2026 Guide
ChatGPT ads are sponsored units — called chat_cards — that appear directly below AI-generated answers inside ChatGPT. They are labelled "Sponsored" so users can distinguish them from the organic response. Self-serve access opened in May 2026, making this one of the newest ad surfaces available to digital marketers.
How do ChatGPT ads appear?
A chat_card is rendered below the AI answer on the same page, in a fixed card layout. The unit displays:
- The advertiser name and favicon (pulled automatically from account settings)
- A title line
- A body copy line
- An image
- A clickable link to a landing page
The card is clearly labelled "Sponsored." It does not interrupt the answer — it appears after the response has finished rendering, so the user has already received the information they came for. That context matters: the ad is a relevant next step, not an interstitial.
What is a chat_card?
The chat_card is the only self-serve format available on ChatGPT Ads as of May 2026. Other formats — such as product cards and multi-product carousels — have been confirmed in managed/agency pilots (OpenAI named Etsy and Shopify as early partners) but are not available for self-serve purchase.
The copy limits to write to are tight:
| Field | Console render limit | API outer limit | |-------|---------------------|-----------------| | Title | ~16–24 characters | 50 characters | | Body | ~32–48 characters | 100 characters |
Write to the console limits, not the API outer limits. The API will accept longer strings, but the Ads Manager UI can truncate them in the rendered card. With so few characters available, every word must earn its place: a specific number or concrete benefit outperforms a clever tagline.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?
Ads are shown only to users on the Free tier and the Go tier ($8/month). Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans never see ads — this is a stated product commitment from OpenAI, not a temporary policy.
Additional audience constraints:
- Age: ads are not shown to users OpenAI knows or predicts to be under 18.
- Logged-out users: reachable in the US, but only with all-ages-appropriate creative (no age signal is available for unauthenticated sessions).
- Scale: ChatGPT had approximately 900 million weekly active users globally as of 2026; the Free and Go audience represents a substantial share of that.
How are ChatGPT ads bought?
OpenAI offers two buying objectives:
- Reach (CPM): pay per thousand impressions. The launch CPM in February 2026 was around $60; observed market rates had fallen to roughly $15–$45 by mid-April as more inventory became available.
- Clicks (CPC): pay per click. This objective became available in the Ads Manager UI on 5 May 2026. Recommended starting bids are in the $3–$5 range, with realized costs varying by category.
Targeting options at self-serve launch are deliberately limited: country targeting and context hints. Context hints are free-text strings you provide to describe the types of conversations where your ad might be useful (for example, "home office setup" or "small business accounting"). They are broad thematic signals — not keyword bidding. Demographics, retargeting, device, and placement targeting are not available.
Who can buy ChatGPT ads today?
This is the most important gate for non-US advertisers to understand plainly: creating a ChatGPT Ads account requires a US legal entity. Specifically, you need a US EIN (Employer Identification Number), a US business address, and a verifiable web presence. Verification is manual and typically takes several business days. A shell holding company created solely to obtain an EIN reportedly fails at verification.
Non-US advertiser onboarding (UK, Canada, Australia, and other markets) was described by OpenAI as "rolling out in the coming weeks" as of mid-May 2026 — but no firm date has been confirmed.
For EU and Hungarian businesses without a US entity, the practical situation today is: ads do not yet serve in continental Europe (deliberately excluded pending GDPR, Digital Markets Act, and EU AI Act compliance work), and advertiser account creation is gated behind US business verification. The guide on which countries are eligible covers the full rollout timeline.
A genuinely new channel
ChatGPT Ads is not a rebadged search or social format. It sits at the moment a user has just had a question answered — a mindset distinct from keyword-triggered search or passive social feed browsing. The pilot launched 9 February 2026; self-serve opened 5 May 2026. Most advertisers have had access for weeks, not years.
First-mover advantage on new channels is real but time-limited. If your business is US-registered and operates in an eligible category — consumer goods, travel, entertainment, digital products, local services, or education — this is the early window.
